Fenwrath, A History | The Government

Politicsn. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.

The Devil’s Dictionary – Ambrose Bierce

Following the events of the Calamity, Fenwrath was left with a void in its leadership. Far away to the East, in the country of Ebriom, a young high elf noticed this void. This young high elf would begin to reshape the history of Fenwrath.

Pailios Nailo was a noble and adviser to the Elvish king of Ebriom. Along with many other wizards and sorcerers, Pailios’s job was to provide knowledge and support to the Elvish king. While providing this council to the Elvish king, Pailios established himself as an accomplished wizard specializing in evocation magic. He was also well known for disagreeing with a variety of policies established by the Elvish king. Most notable of these policies was the establishment of daily sacrifices to the demons plaguing the land during the Calamity.

In the eyes of the king these sacrifices were to appease the demons. Pailios, however, was disgusted by the king’s lack of courage in the face of evil. Pailios began to plan. He gathered informants and allies throughout the kingdom of Ebriom. His informants worked to sow seeds of chaos within the king’s court. Over time, more and more of the king’s most trusted began to see the error of their ways. Unfortunately for Pailios, he would have needed a much larger army at his back to take on the Elvish King.

He did have enough men to move westward. Rather than continue to be under the thumb of a man he thought to be a coward, he decided to shift his focus to conquering the land without a ruler. Pailios crossed the Great Expanse and entered the territory that would become known as Fenwrath. The people in this territory were lawless. It was easy pickings for the developed tacticians within Pailios’s ranks. Soon most of the country of Fenwrath was under his control, with the remaining areas not far behind. Following the lead of all the rulers he had known in his life, Pailios formed a monarchy. He took the rank of king and had a small council of his most trusted to aid in the decisions of his new throne.

The reign of King Pailios Nailo lasted for nearly 200 years. During this 200 years, Fenwrath was relatively peaceful. King Nailo quelled the occasional riot and kept his people fed. The Elves that had traveled westward with him saw the original inhabitants of Fenwrath as lesser creatures. The humans, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, and dragonborn were all treated unfairly by their new Elvish overlords. Most were too afraid of the Elves to do anything about their treatment. The end of the Elvish reign over Fenwrath came at the hands of a human man by the name of Daxio Nayrond.

The Reign of Daxio Nayrond

Daxio was born of noble blood in the city of Windcrest to the far north of Fenwrath. With the racism of the elves it was easy for Daxio to unite the uncommon races under one banner. Daxio reigned with an iron hammer, placing highly respected families into positions of power throughout all the major cities, and then turning them into vampires as a means of securing his most trusted allies. Those who refused this gift were killed and replaced. King Daxio Nayrond was not a great man, but an amazing leader. He led the country through a prosperous time. For several years, trade was exclusively throughout Fenwrath with very little if any leaving for the Elvish country of Ebriom.

After the Heroes of Fenwrath saved the kingdom with the assistance of the former Elvish King Pailios Nailo, who until that point had been thought dead, Pailios took it upon himself to rid the world of Daxio Nayrond once and for all. Unfortunately accounts of these events have become somewhat muddled throughout the eras. Many believe that Pailios Nailo had fallen in love with Daxio Nayrond’s arranged wife Elizabeth Picarro. When Daxio learned of this sordid affair he disposed of his wife, and started a war that would lead to a near genocide of the Elvish peoples in Fenwrath. Pailios disappeared during this war, which seems to be what saved the elves from being wiped out of Fenwrath.

The council was founded in the year 4E208, after the events of King Nayrond’s demise. Every 5 years the council meets and Fenwrathian’s everywhere cast a vote for nominees. If there are no nominees the council continues on.

Below the council and in charge of the laws of Fenwrath are the Chancellors. Each Chancellor is a political figurehead in charge of passing the Council’s judgement and instituting new laws.

Below Chancellors are the leaders of the city watch and religious Envoys for each respective city. The Head of the city watch is responsible for implementing laws, and keeping the peace. Their title is based on the individuals rank, usually a Captain. The religious Envoys (usually a High Priest or Priestess) are in charge of all religious affairs and aiding with the homeless and poor, and medical services within a given city. (ie. In Greywater Celeste has a High Priestess that is considered a lesser form of royalty.)

This is a working document and will be updated occasionally. So be sure to check back every now and then!
